A few people have mused at some point that top-break revolvers would actually make more sense as a defensive pistol than swing-out cylinders. They were also one of the most popular designs well into the 20th century but eventually were phased out. Why? Because they became obsolete, mostly due to changes in ammunition.
Major George Schofield Major George Schofield designed the Top Break as a cavalry pistol. Its efficient, break-open design could be operated with one hand. That made it easy to eject the spent cartridges and reload while on horseback. It was the Russian government that truly embraced the new side arm.

Navy Colt revolver The only revolver I know of that can be absolutely documented as having belonged to Doc is a cap-and-ball Model 1851 Navy Colt revolver with a standard 7-inch barrel, Serial No. 198418, with its original holster. Doc’s uncle Dr. John Stiles Holliday gave his nephew this Navy Colt after the Civil War.
The Colt 1873 Peacemaker was his weapon of choice, although, at various times, he also carried Remingtons and Smith & Wesson Schofields.
