Favored by off-road drivers, the SM465 has a very low first gear suitable for rock-crawling. The SM465 has developed a reputation as a highly durable transmission.
It’s thought the CH in CH 465 stands for Chevrolet, and the SM in SM465 stands for either Saginaw Muncie or Synchro Mesh. Either way, this is a very durable four speed manual gearbox that is ideally suited for off-road name and towing/hauling heavythings.
The earlier era of the SM465 include the 1968 – 1978 transmissions. There were both 2wd and 4wd versions. Internally, they are identical to each with the exception of the transmission mainshaft.
Our GM LS to SM465 Adapter Kit utilizes a 2006 Chevy Silverado 6.0 flywheel, starter, and clutch kit. … Our GM LS engine to SM465 / SM420 adapter kit works with all GM LS engines, including the 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L and 6.2L. Further, it works with 4-speed transmissions that were used in GM 1 ton trucks from mid 80’s.

Muncie 4 Speed M20 or M21. $2899.99 OR WITH Muncie CORE exchange $2499.99. If you have no useable core the price is $2899.99!!
depending on whether you call granny low first or not. I read somewhere the tranny holds 4.2 quarts.
According to the Amsoil catalog my 1988 SM465 calls for 5w-30 Transmission Oil. That sounds awful thin for that trans. I know the older SM465’s used 80w-90 gear oil. Exactly what does this trans take for oil?

The 2nd gear in the SM465 is synchronized. It will be very difficult to downshift into 2nd above 7-10 MPH though. 1st and reverse are not synchronized.
General Motors In 1990 Hydramatic Muncie plant became part of the GM-Chrysler New Venture Gear. In February 2002 General Motors sold its minority 36% stake in the New Venture Gear company to DaimlerChrysler and the Muncie Transmission plant reverted to GM control. GM changed the plant name to Manual Transmissions Of Muncie.
It will hold 3 pints when empty.

Muncie 4 speeds are still manufactured for GM cars still around from the 1963-to-1975 era.
Therefore, the Muncie patent is basically a design for the layout of a 4-speed transmission. This layout is a 4-speed transmission with four forward gear ratios in the main case, a midplate bearing support, and a reverse gearset in the extension housing.
M22 gears are also made of a higher-grade nickel alloy. The M20 and M21 cluster gears are cut at a 45-degree angle. The reduced gear angle of the M22 created a problem with noise (hence the name rock-crusher).
The Most Powerful Cars That Still Offer a Manual Transmission
Look for the GM sign imprinted on the transmission box to identify the manufacturer of the transmission. Check whether there are any rings around the shaft splines. An M-22 Rock Crusher has no rings, so if you see rings in your transmission, it means it is not an M-22 Rock Crusher.
How Much Oil Is Needed for a Muncie Transmission?
As has been discussed in previous posts, NP205 transfer cases require 80-90wt Gear oil.
The 205 is a stronger transfer case. But the 208 is pretty strong plus is has a much better low range for slower crawl speeds.
The New Process 203 Transfer Case is a fullsize, full time, chain driven transfer case. … The transfer case does have a locked setting for both low and high range operation, which locks the differential, disabling the full time behavior and equally transmitting power between the front and rear axles.
NP205= gear driven, cast iron case, 1.96:1 low, very strong T-case. NP208= chain driven, aluminum cased 2.6:1 or so low range not so strong and vulnerable to rocks due to aluminum case.
